I am working in thesis many chapters and section break next page within chapters and between chapters. I run into problems with the footnote numbering and all results are similar to this trail. Any one have any fixes or thoughts

I have multiple sections in my document (one for each chapter, so that the names of my headers can reflect the chapter titles). If I follow the instructions to get the endnotes at the end of a section, it puts the endnotes for each chapter at the end of that chapter. I want all the endnotes gathered together at the end of the document but before the index. Is there a way to do this?

Hi Helen,
If you want to place your index after your endnotes. You can add a "next page" section break after the end of your document's body and just before the index. Then your document should now contain two sections — one for the body of the document and one for the index. Then insert endnotes at the end of document. See screenshot:

I wanted the Chapters to  start on right hand page, for example Ch 2 has end notes on page 31. Set cursor to the beginning of page 32, that is to the left of the 3, and Insert Blank  Page. The page is inserted before Ch 3, but  has a page number.  Go to Page Layout > breaks and click on Continuous and page number goes away.. Works for me, hope it works for you

It does work, but you have to do Step 3 first in a brand new document. Meaning:

1) Open a NEW document. Then do Layout > Breaks > Next Page
2) In the NEW document, go to References tab, click the Footnote & Endnote launcher. In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, select End of section from the Endnotes drop down, and then click the Apply button.3) Go to the Original Document, Hit Select All > Copy
4) Go back to the New Document, scroll up to the first page and put the curser BEFORE the Page Break5) Hit Paste.
You can then add more pages after the end notes.

That didn't work either. No option for the endnote/footnote dialog box.

Didn't work for me in Word 365 :-(

Does not work because the layout > features are grayed out after footnotes. Hence the search for how to get around this.

Hey Susan, this is because you placed the cursor manually at the 'end' of the document (I did the same). If you press 'ctrl' + 'end' instead, it puts you to the real end of the document, which is right above the endnotes. Here, the features are not grayed out and you can proceed as described above.

I'm feeling very dense right about now... I have no 'end' button. What now?
